Basic descriptions are listed here. Please check nhs.us for additional info and to download online award applications.

NHS Scholarship

While all NHS members are required to demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, service, and character, the annual winners of the NHS Scholarship are truly the cream of the crop. From more than 9,500 nominations, 200 senior class members were awarded $1,000 each in 2002. Since 1946, the NHS Scholarships have provided more than $10 million to deserving NHS members. Nominees are required to answer an essay question as part of the nomination form, which is mailed to all active chapters in early November. The postmark deadline for 2004-2005 school year nominations is TBA. Active NHS chapters may nominate two seniors to compete for the national awards.

Principal's Leadership Award

NASSP, in partnership with Herff Jones, Inc., also offers the Principal's Leadership Award. High school principals from across the country could nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record. They also were required to write an essay. In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education, and that co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum. Nomination forms for 2004-05 school year competitions will be mailed to all high school principals in early October. The postmark deadline for submitting nominations for the 2004-05 school year is TBA. One Hundred and Fifty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to outstanding seniors from all 50 United States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognize students in grades 5-12 who have demonstrated exemplary community service. The awards program is sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the NASSP. Over the past eight years the program has honored nearly 50,000 young volunteers at the local, state and national level. Schools and officially designated organizations may select one middle level and one high school Local Honoree for every 1,000 students (or portion thereof). Local Honorees are judged at the state level and 104 State Honorees (including Honorees from Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia) receive $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in May 2004 where 10 National Honorees are chosen. Each of the 10 National Honorees receives an additional $5,000, a gold medallion and a crystal trophy for his or her school. In addition, Kids In Distressed Situations, Inc. makes a donation of $25,000 worth of children's products in each of their names to local needy children.

TREE NLC Scholarship

The Trust to Reach Education Excellence (TREE) will provide 30 scholarships for deserving student leaders or emerging leaders to participate in the 2003 camps. Postmark deadlines for the 2003 TREE Scholarship nomination forms will be March 25, 2003.
