PROBATION & DISMISSAL POLICY

What the Klein Oak By-Laws say:

Grades will be checked and should you fall below the standard, you will be placed on a one-time probation. If you have been on probation once and again fall below the standard, you will lose your membership permanently. A member may also be placed on probation or dismissed if he/she fails to attend at least 50% of the scheduled meetings and donate at least ten hours to one or more community service projects, and another ten hours to one or more in-school activity projects during the semester. Serious disciplinary infractions may also result in loss of membership without any probation.

What the NHS Constitution says:

Section 1. The school principal may remove any member as a result of serious or persistent misconduct. In this instance Section 5 below would not apply.
Section 2. The procedure for dismissal shall be determined by a faculty council in compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Honor Society. A written description of the dismissal procedure shall be available to interested parties (one of those descriptions is here). To maintain academic eligibility a student must maintain a semester average of "A" or its equivalent (a 4.0 on the 6.0 Klein Oak scale). The exit criteria shall be evaluated on a semester basis. Eligibility must be maintained through the fifth six-week grading period of the senior year.
Section 3. Members who fall below the standards which were the basis for their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter adviser and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency, except that in the case of flagrant violation of school rules or civic laws a member does not necessarily have to be warned. The appropriate grade level administrator shall notify the National Honor Society of any member's conduct which falls below selection standards, i.e. I.S.S., "U" in conduct, truancy, frequent referrals to the office.
Section 4. The faculty council shall determine when an individual has exceeded a reasonable number of warnings.
Section 5. In all cases of impending dismissal, a member shall have a right to a hearing before the faculty council.
Section 6. A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the faculty council under the same rules for disciplinary appeals in the school district.
Section 7. The National Council and the NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases.
Section 8. A member can also be dismissed if he/she fails to be active in the organization. A member must attend at least 50% of the schedule meetings and participate in at least one service project each semester or turn in documentation in lieu of the service project to show ten (10) hours of community service.
