Legislation Research Project

My instructional goal for this project is for you to learn how to do some basic legislative research, by doing some basic legislative research. I'm sure most of you have no idea how to do that, so you will be guided step-by-step through this project.

You will work alone or with one partner on this short-term, major grade project. If you choose to work with a partner, both partners will receive the same grade. So choose wisely.

You will submit five documents for grading purposes. [Click an image below to open the document.]

Step #1 Step #2 Step #3 Step #4 Step #5

bullet

An online form for Step #1 reporting with whom you are partnering, if you are, and what bill you have chosen to base your research on.

bullet

A Microsoft Word document for Step #2 reporting information about your bill.

bullet

A Microsoft Word document for Step #3 reporting information about the House and Senate sponsors of your chosen bill.

bullet

A Microsoft Word document for Step #4 reporting information about the interest groups that support or oppose your chosen bill.

bullet

A Microsoft Word document for Step #5 reporting information about the orientation of one of the interest groups you reported on in Step #4.

You will submit each document electronically. You'll fill out the online form in step #1 then click on submit to send it. For the other four documents you must open the document, fill it out on a computer, save it, then submit it in the appropriate drop box.

Each document will be worth 20 points. If your reports are thorough, accurate, and submitted correctly and on time you will receive full credit. Missed deadlines will incur a 10% deduction (2 points on an individual report) for one day late, 20% deduction for two days late, 30% reduction for three days late, and after that they will be accepted for evaluation but not graded.

E-mail your questions to your teacher at gnelson@kleinisd.net. Of course you can call me at home at 281-251-1286, or ask questions in class.

Good luck, everyone! I hope you enjoy this project while learning something about legislative research.
