Introducing the Course

OBJECTIVE 

Students shall be able to identify and describe the sources of and reasons for the existence of the law.
 

ACTIVITIES

  1. Students shall read “The Ambiguous Suicide Case.” 

  2. Discuss in what instances the state is justified in intervening in order to change or punish conduct. 

  3. Move this to a discussion of the sources of the law and differing theories of the rationale for imposing criminal or civil sanctions:  utilitarianism, retribution, and rehabilitation

  4. Outline the course in terms of a study of these ideas in the various contexts.

Assignments: Read chapter two in the text.
