Opening Documents

Most of the materials provided here are in Microsoft Office formats.

Microsoft Word files

You must have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, or another program that will open a Word (*.doc) file, in order to use Word documents. Most of these documents are also available in Adobe's Portable Document Format (*.pdf). You must have the Adobe Reader installed on your computer to view these. You cannot edit these documents - just view and/or print.

If you want to be able to modify one of the documents, you can do so with Word or some other word processing programs.

  • Wordpad - which is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system - can open most of these, although some formatting will not be correct.

  • AppleWorks - which comes with most Macs - will open these documents, preserving formatting except for any footnotes.

  • WordPerfect will open all these documents, preserving formatting.

Microsoft PowerPoint files

You must have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your computer, or another program that will open a PowerPoint (*.ppt) file, in order to use PowerPoint slideshows. Most of these slideshows are also available in html (web page - *.html or *.htm or *.shtml) format, although these will only display accurately in the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. Of course, you cannot modify the html documents.

  • If you want to open the *.ppt files for viewing only, and you have the Windows operating system, click here to download the free PowerPoint viewer.

  • If you want to open the *.ppt files for viewing only, and you have the Macintosh operating system, click here instead.

If you want to be able to modify the presenations, or create your own, you'll need PowerPoint or another presentations program that can open a *.ppt slideshow.

  • Presentations by Corel - part of the WordPerfect Office suite.
